Kamelot

Kamelot are a band you can rely on! For several years now, they've fascinated their fans with their own brand of melodic power metal, vocalist Roy Khan's charismatic voice and Thomas Youngblood's powerful and at the same time intricate guitar work. Along with drummer Casey Grillo and bassist Glenn Barry, the band's trademarks are unmistakeable; each of their albums is marked by superior compositions and an impressive technique. At the same time, Kamelot have continued to redefine their sound, year by year, tour by tour, album by album. After a year of songwriting, pre-production, recording, mixing and mastering, Kamelot's next masterwork is finally ready. Their latest offering is called The Black Halo and mixes typical Kamelot characteristics like melody, speedo and classical orchestrations with new ideas and fresh influences. "In addition to the complex subject matter, The Black Halo sounds tougher and darker than our previous releases, without dramatic alterations to our style," comments Roy Khan. "We've put even more emphasis on a dynamic guitar sound, tailoring it to the concise and carefully written songs." States guitarist Thomas Youngblood As usual, Khan and Youngblood started to work on the material early, allowing enough time for the production team to develop the intricate arrangements in their full splendour. The continuation of their Faustus adaptation about the battle between good and evil that began on the predecessor album, Epica , again combines Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's opus with the band's own experiences and views. The story is as multi-layered as it is deep, and it works on several levels. "This part is clearly more complex than the previous one; it deals extensively with political, cultural and religious events at Goethe's time, and there is no obvious red line through the story. On The Black Halo however there are many cross references relating to our own lives, fragments of private experiences and our political opinions, like of the war in Iraq." As would appear fitting in view of the ambitious theme, Kamelot were supported by various guest musicians during the recordings of The Black Halo , the most renowned among them Shagrath, vocalist with Dimmu Borgir, and Stratorvarius keyboard magician Jens Johansson. The opener, the gripping mid-tempo number 'March of Mephisto' features a sensational meeting of Kamelot, Shagrath and Johansson. "This song embodies the album's atmosphere," Khan explains. "On the one hand you have Kamelot's typical stylistic means, then Shagrath, the frontman of the world's currently most important black metal band, and an amazing solo by Jens, whose "violininstic" approach represents the devil's instrument." Another impressive track is 'Memento Mori' with around nine minutes playing time, Kamelot's longest number not only on The Black Halo but also in the band's entire history. Khan: "An epic, bombastic track that stands for the end of the concept, but not for the end of the album; a little piece of art in itself." We don't need to mention the fact that next to unusual tracks, there are also typical Kamelot numbers along the lines of 'Soul Society', which feature the musicians from their speedy, powerful and at the same time deeply melodic and melancholy side. "We are always reaching for new sounds and goals with our music, but remaining true to our roots and the "Kamelot Sound" that we have created over the years", states Youngblood. The Black Halo was produced mainly at the Pathway and Gate studios in Wolfsburg under the direction of Sascha Paeth and Miro.Guest musicians, next to Shagrath and Johansson, are Simone Simons, vocalist with Dutch act Epica, Mari (Masqueraid), and the Kamelot choir consisting of Herbie Langhans (7 th Avenue), Amanda Somerville-Scharf, Miro, Gerit Göbel, Thomas Rettke (Heaven's Gate) and Elisabeth Kjaernes plus additional guests. "I'd like to give a special mention to Cinzia Rizzo, who sings in Italian on the intermezzo 'Un Assassinio Molto Silenzioso', adding an authentic cabaret feeling to that part," says Khan. The Black Halo deals with Love & Wonder, Life & Death through the eyes of Kamelot. The band's seventh effort, The Black Halo, was released in 2005. To support the new album the band went on tour through Europe and Japan during the first leg of the Black Halo World Tour 2005, they played headliner shows with Epica and Kotipelto as support. In Japan the support was Silent Force. They also played on the Bang Your Head!!! Festival in Germany and the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium. In 2005 they shot their first music videos ever, for the songs The Haunting (Somewhere In Time) and March Of Mephisto from the album The Black Halo. Both videos were shot by acclaimed director Patric Ullaeus. The 5th of October 2005 saw the addition of Oliver Palotai as the fifth official band member, Oliver will handle both keyboards and (additional) guitars. On the second leg of the Black Halo World Tour they visited North and South America (USA, Canada, Brazil) as well as Europe (The Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and Norway). During this part of the tour the bands forthcoming live DVD will be shot, with the main concert being shot on February 11th, 2006 at Rockefeller Music Hall in Oslo, Norway. The shoot will be handled by Patric Ullaeus and promises to be full of surprises for all the fans. Release date is scheduled for Summer/Fall 2006 via SPV Records. HISTORY: Kamelot signed a recording contract in 1994, releasing their debut, Eternity , the following August. The press praised the album as one of the most promising first offerings ever. 1996 saw the arrival of Dominion , an album that sounded even more varied and diverse than its predecessor. In spring 1997 Kamelot found Casey Grillo and the former Conception vocalist Khan, who joined the group during the production of Siege Perilous . In autumn of the same year, the new line-up embarked on an extensive European tour and returned to the Gate studios in Wolfsburg twelve months later to work on the album that set a new standard for the band; The Fourth Legacy. In summer 2000, Kamelot's first live album was recorded during the New Allegiance tour, which took them through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Greece and Spain. Only a few months later, Khan, Youngblood, Grillo and bass player Glen Barry presented their fifth studio cut, Karma , and embarked on a European tour. Epica arrived in 2003, followed by another tour as Headliners in Europe, Japan, Mexico and the US as well many top Festival appearances. The Black Halo adds another exciting and epic chapter to the band's brilliant history.

Huntington Beach Resident Launches New Clothing Line – Orange County Clothing Company

Huntington Beach, California (PRWEB) January 18, 2013

Orange County Clothing Company (OCCC) is a local / grass roots clothing line created by long-time Huntington Beach resident, Seth Matson. OCCC focuses mostly on cool and fun tees, hoodies, hats and art which embodies the So-Cal, OC beach lifestyle. All of the clothing and art is created in and by Orange County residents, resembling styles like other popular OC brand names at a killer low price. OCCCs product line is comparable to the styles of billion dollar industry leaders like Quiksilver, Billabong, Hurley, Volcom, Roxy & RVCA all businesses created in Orange County, CA, the hub for the sports industry.

Currently, the majority of sales are digital and available to the public online at http://www.occlothingcompany.com. By focusing primarily on a digital presence, OCCC has streamlined its approach to offer an e-commerce experience thats a snap to use. With fast and easy navigation and great imagery, OCCC utilizes a super simple one-page checkout system that accepts both credit card and Paypal.

OCCCs designs are all created locally. With a wide offering of tees for guys, girls, kids, toddlers, babies, Matson also incorporated an interesting array of art, hoodies, hats, beanies, sunglasses, books, dvd’s, stickers and more. What makes OCCC unique is that all the products are local and come from Orange County residents.

Matson notes “This is a brand for your next door neighbor. Everyone has a next door neighbor. We have something for everyone from moms and dads to kids to babies. I feel that Orange County is lacking in Local Grass Roots Clothing companies. I wanted to create something that the artists of Orange County could be involved with and feel proud to show off their talents on the tees. Ive been designing t-shirts for companies for 15 plus years now. My first t-shirt design was for Billabong back in the eighties. It became one of their best sellers that year according to Mike Lesher VP of Sales. Its fun wearing your own t-shirt designs around town and having people comment how much they like them. Im excited to watch OCCC grow over the next few years.

With a history in the surf community that encompasses his entire life, Matson, a surfer since his own grommet days at the HB Pier, surfed on the Huntington Beach High School Surf Team and has worked for top clothing manufacturers Billabong and Hurley. He then branched off to start up his first entrepreneurial startup The Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series. Matson sat in as the Vice Chair of the Huntington Beach Surfrider Foundation in 2011 and currently serves on the board of directors for the non-profit foundation Surfers for Cetaceans. He is also the associate producer on the Award Winning Documentary, Minds in the Water.

Matson, an artist at heart, obtained a degree in graphic design, which he utilized intensely with the Pro/Am Surf Series, and then moved on to form his own graphic design business, Matson Graphics, where he has helped many small businesses grow successful with his savvy design skills and web knowledge.

The Aristocrats

The word “supergroup” is tossed around a lot in instrumental music circles, the result of a seemingly endless supply of efforts to package together individual virtuoso players and make a band out of them. But every once in a while, the group part of that shopworn term becomes authentic and real. Such is the case with The Aristocrats – guitarist Guthrie Govan, bassist Bryan Beller, and drummer Marco Minnemann – who defiantly and joyously blow the supergroup stereotype to bits, thrilling audiences and fans around the world in the process.

Let’s get the requisite individual credentials out of the way:

* Guthrie Govan is arguably the hottest guitarist on the international music scene today, and his 2006 solo album Erotic Cakes was widely recognized as an instant classic. His top-level touring experience (Asia/GPS, U.K. rap superstar Dizzee Rascal) complements his busy schedule as one the most in-demand guitar clinician/educators in the world, and he was featured on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine in July of 2011;

* Bryan Beller’s numerous credits include guitarists Steve Vai (Beller’s featured on Vai’s 2009 live DVD Where The Wild Things Are), Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa), and the hugely popular metal “band” Dethklok, borne of the Adult Swim (U.S.) animated TV show Metalocalypse. His solo artist catalog includes three CD’s, two DVD’s, and an instructional DVD for Alfred Publishing, and he was featured on the cover of Bass Player Magazine in October of 2012;

* Marco Minnemann has played with everyone from Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) and Adrian Belew (Zappa, King Crimson) to technical death metal specialists Necrophagist, and is looked upon by fans and peers as one of the most gifted, innovative, cutting-edge drummers in the world. He’s graced the covers of several drum magazines, including Modern Drummer. Perhaps less known: He’s a multi-instrumentalist and compulsively productive composer with nearly twenty CD & DVD solo releases to date.

Despite their individual followings, The Aristocrats’ formation was a matter of considerable happenstance on a barely-paying gig. Beller and Minnemann had a trio slot scheduled at the Winter NAMM show in Anaheim, CA in January of 2011, and their guitarist was a late dropout. Govan was a last-minute replacement who they met for the first time in rehearsal, the night before the show. The electricity was immediately obvious, with their unbeknownst-to-them shared influences infusing a high-energy instrumental fusion with an aggressive, playful, even cheeky edge.

The single 45-minute set they performed the following night unexpectedly floored the audience – and themselves – with near-telepathic interplay and boundless musical energy, leaving heads shaking in disbelief that it was their very first gig. The response was overwhelming, and the band formed practically by demand on the spot. “The chemistry was so great,” recalls Govan, “that when we came offstage we all said to each other, ‘This is working. We should record this.’”

A mere three months later, the band convened in person in Chicago – eschewing the usual remote file sharing method in favor of actual live band chemistry – and tracked their debut album in just eight days. Consisting of nine tracks (three contributions from each member), the music turned out to be a melting pot of their respective influences, ranging from the seminal ’70s jazz-rock fusion of Return To Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra, to the progressive rock of King Crimson and UK, to guitar heroes like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, to the absurdly complex and satirical music of Frank Zappa and Mike Keneally, and even to ’90s groove metal like Rage Against The Machine. But this strange brew is peppered with memorable melodies, myriad shifts in dynamics, and sensitive treatment of musical timbres that explore the limits of what the electric guitar, electric bass and drums in a power trio can achieve.

Beller says of the tunes, “We ended up using our different influences to write for each other. I wrote “Sweaty Knockers” specifically for Guthrie to have fun with, while Guthrie wrote “I Want A Parrot” with bass leads in mind. As for Marco’s material, we’re just lucky to be able to keep up with it.”

The ever-mischievous Minnemann’s song titles – such as “Boing!…I’m In The Back” (borne from a publicly indescribable incident in Russia) and “Blues Fuckers” (in which a typical blues form is violated in every way imaginable) – along with Beller’s “Sweaty Knockers,” prompted Govan to wonder if the band shouldn’t be named The Aristocrats, after the infamous dirty joke and movie of the same name. It stuck, and The Aristocrats were born. “We’re going to have a raucous rock vibe and a sense of humor about the music,” says Govan, “which you might not expect to find in other muso projects in which people are flung together to make an album in a hurry.”

The band released The Aristocrats on their own label, BOING Music, in September of 2011. It was universally praised as one of the most interesting and groundbreaking instrumental albums of the year in publications from America to Japan, France, Germany, and around the world. Seemingly every major guitar magazine took the opportunity to finally do their feature or cover story on Guthrie Govan, and the album appeared on many of that year’s top ten lists. Music schools in particular felt the impact, as a wave of students took to covering Aristocrats tunes much in the same way Steve Vai’s Passion And Warfare inspired players a generation ago.

As of 2012, the band has successfully toured both coasts and the Midwest/mid-south of America, eastern Canada, the U.K., Benelux, France, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Poland, Croatia, Turkey, Greece, Israel, Korea, and Japan. The band’s live energy and otherwordly chemistry are captured on the DVD/2CD release BOING, We’ll Do It Live! The Aristocrats At Alvas Showroom, which is set for a December 2012 release. Looking to the future, the band plans to start tracking its second studio album in January of 2013.

The key thing to remember is that The Aristocrats are a true band. Whether it’s about the music, the touring plans, the record artwork and sequence, the business decisions, or what have you, everyone has an equal say. Perhaps Guthrie said it best when he used the phrase “a rowdy democracy of musicianship.”

It’s not just fusion. It’s not just shredding. It’s not even meant to be taken seriously at times. It’s just the sound of a new band, consisting of three guys who did a NAMM show gig and discovered they had something musically deep going on together…and also had a propensity for employing R-rated song titles.

So what do you call an act like that?

The Aristocrats.
