Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Centennial, CO (PRWEB) December 22, 2012

A new video entitled Worlds Best Tamales Gluten Free Vegan is available on the Alternative Cook Channel on You Tube to show step-by-step how to make them. Tamales are a traditional holiday food and now those with Celiac disease, gluten intolerance and Autism can enjoy this festive food.

Jean Duane, Alternative Cook shows how to make the worlds best tamales featuring the three sister filling of pintos, squash and sweet potatoes which combine to make a lovely taste and mouth-feel. She demonstrates how to make (gluten-free) masa harina dough. Step-by-step, Ms. Duane presents how to soak the husks, press the dough into the husk, fill, roll, tie and steam the tamales. Then she demonstrates how to make a vegetable sauce to compliment the tamales. This recipe makes about 24 tamales, which can be served after steaming one hour, or wrapped in an airtight container and frozen for a quick meal. Just microwave 2-3 minutes and top with salsa.

Tamales are a holiday tradition from Latin America and given as gifts. Making them is a fun family activity someone can make the dough, someone else the filling(s) and everyone can take part in rolling and eating them. These tamales are easy to make and filled with mouth-watering flavor, says Ms. Duane. The recipe is embedded in the video, so it is easy to follow along on your portable device.

Taken from the Mexican DVD, a beautifully produced full-length cooking instruction video that shows how to make several traditional Mexican foods such as black beans with a cool, refreshing salsa and lime rice, enchiladas stuffed with vegetable and tofu cheese and topped with a warm, authentic red sauce, tostadas with a mushroom and bean base topped with homemade salsa and guacamole, burritos made with a hearty stuffing and a tangy, zesty green sauce and nachos with a cheese topping. Jean Duane, Alternative Cook makes gluten-free, vegan cooking a tasty breeze.

Whenever, Wherever: Now Partnering With Free Apps, Red Apple Readings Specialized Tutoring Program Gives Access On-The-Go

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Beaumont, CA (PRWEB) December 05, 2012

Tammy Bennecke, who spent years in the classroom as both an elementary and reading intervention teacher, was no stranger to the array of learners in her classroom. Her heart went out to those who fell behind their classmates, simply because they had not gained the reading proficiency of their peers. Bennecke knew that, while one student may gain reading proficiency quickly, others had more difficulty grasping the early concepts of language literacy.

Benneckes solution was the creation of Red Apple Reading, an interactive online reading system, created with easy use and widespread access in mind. From the desktop to the laptop to the tablet, Red Apple Reading is breaking new ground, and rising to the top of educational assistance software on the market today.

Red Apple Reading is easy to accessall users need is an Internet connectionand no download or DVD is required. The program can be accessed on any device, allowing youngsters the opportunity to log in and work on lessons anytime, anywhere: in the car, at grandma and grandpas house, or even between soccer games.

Now, the program is even easier to access. Red Apple Reading has announced their program is now compatible with 2 free iTunes apps, iSwifter and “Rover,” that work by allowing iPad and other Apple devices to stream Red Apple Readings Flash content and other tools simultaneously. Whats more, these apps ensure that youngsters using the Wi-Fi connection to access Red Apple Readings online tutoring are protected by the Childrens Internet Protection Act (CIPA), giving parents peace of mind.

With increased on-the-go access now available to Apple users, Bennecke is happy to know youngsters will have expanded access to her program. The result, Bennecke hopes, is a larger amount of early learners who gain a foothold in essential reading skills available through Red Apple Reading.

Ive seen firsthand the relief and joy a parent feels once their child goes from a struggling reader to a lover of books, Bennecke said. To be a part of that, to help kids on their path to successful reading that makes me very happy.”

About Red Apple Reading:

Red Apple Reading is a Montana company founded in 2011 by educator Tammy Bennecke, with offices in Southern California. The program is expanding from its development phase (Level A), now available for sale on their website, to programs that will soon be available for the full range of pre-kindergarten through third grade reading students. Red Apple Reading plans to expand into other subject areas as the companys growth continues. Learn More About Red Apple Reading

Paul Kelly – free live performance

Paul Kelly’s remarkable 11-song album Spring and Fall — his 19th studio album and first collection of new material in five years — ranks with the seminal Australian singer-songwriter’s most memorable and resonant work, demonstrating why he’s virtually a national hero in his home country and one of the most celebrated songwriters on the planet.

Spring and Fall arrived on the heels of an extended period of retrospective activity, during which Kelly celebrated his extensive body of work with the release of the career-spanning 40-song compilation Songs From the South (Volumes 1 & 2) and the eight-CD, 105-song live box set The A-Z Recordings. In addition, there is an ongoing catalog re-issue campaign underway for his original (non-A&M) albums, most of which have long been out of print, or were never released in North America.

In a career that’s spanned more than 30 years, Kelly has released a steady stream of albums showcasing his emotionally vivid, musically expansive songwriting and his uncanny ability to distill a novel’s worth of narrative and character detail into an effortlessly melodic pop tune. The qualities that have made Paul Kelly an inspiration to his fans and peers are prominent throughout Spring and Fall, which ranks with the artist’s finest work in terms of melodic craft, verbal eloquence and emotional insight, with evocatively spare arrangements that set the ideal tone for such thematically related new Kelly compositions as "When A Woman Loves A Man", “New Found Year”, “Someone New” and “Time and Tide.” Kelly, accompanied by noted Australian producer/multi-instrumentalist J. Walker from Machine Translations and Paul’s frequent tour guitarist (and nephew) Dan Kelly, recorded most of the album in an isolated country hall in the hills of the remote rural region of South Gippsland in Victoria, Australia in the dead of a turbulent winter, with violent storms, floods, power failures and mild earthquakes regularly threatening to throw the project into turmoil. Despite the threats from nature, the pieces ultimately fell into place, with the sessions emphasizing the immediacy of the live, up-close performances and stark, stripped-down arrangements, with the sounds of the wind and the rain occasionally getting into the microphones. The result is one of the most effortlessly compelling albums of Kelly’s storied career.

While he's best known in America for such acclaimed albums as Gossip, Under the Sun, So Much Water So Close to Home, Comedy, Wanted Man and Deeper Water, Paul Kelly’s prolific body of work incorporates a wide array of departures, collaborations and side projects. He’s recorded as a member of the studio supergroup Stardust Five, branched out stylistically to record an album with the Australian bluegrass combo Uncle Bill and created experimental dub-reggae as part of the techno-groove ensemble Professor Ratbaggy. His interest in aboriginal issues has led him to collaborate with aboriginal songwriter Archie Roach and the multicultural group Yothu Yindi. He also provided award-winning musical scores for the films Lantana, One Night the Moon and Jindabyne; and wrote songs for, and acted in, the Australian stage play Funerals and Circuses. He’s written songs for several other Australian artists, and was the inspiration for the tribute album Women at the Well, on which 14 female performers interpreted Kelly compositions. He’s published four volumes of his song lyrics, and written pieces for the prestigious Australian magazine The Monthly. Kelly was recently the focus of an all-star tribute concert in Melbourne honoring his 30th anniversary as a recording artist, and in 2012 was the subject of the feature-length documentary Paul Kelly: Stories of Me (which will be released on DVD in North America in September of 2013). Beyond the copious tributes and accolades, it’s Paul Kelly’s songs, and his knack for performing them with maximum conviction, that makes him a world-class creative force, and Spring and Fall ranks with his most powerful work. After more than three decades of music-making, his work remains every bit as adventurous and inspired as ever.

Advocate Condell Offers flu Shot Fundraiser, Free Colorectal Screen

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

Libertyville, IL (PRWEB) September 01, 2012

Advocate Condell Medical Center is helping to fight flu and cancer, all at once.

The Libertyville hospital is a holding pair of flu shot clinics that also will serve as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. In addition, registered participants will receive a free colorectal cancer screening kit along with a DVD from the ACS on colon cancer prevention.

A limited number of influenza vaccines will be available for a suggested $ 10 donation to benefit ACS. The vaccine will be administered by injection to people age 18 and over. The Center for Disease Control recommends that people over 6 months of age receive the vaccine annually.

Participants also will receive free colorectal cancer screening kits, which include instructions on how to perform the test at home. Kits are then returned to the hospital, and results will be available in about one week.

Colorectal cancer is preventable and curable if treated early, but the disease is the third-leading cause of cancer deaths. According to the ACS, regular screening or testing is one of the best ways to help prevent colorectal cancer. Some polyps, or growths, can be found and removed before they have the chance to turn into cancer. Screening can also help find colorectal cancer early, when it is small and more likely to be cured.

The flu clinic fundraisers will be held from 7-11 am on Monday, Oct. 1, at Advocate Condell Medical Center, West Tower, 801 S. Milwaukee Avenue, Libertyville; and 7-11 am on Monday, Oct. 8, at Advocate Condells Gurnee Centre Club, 1405 N. Hunt Club Road, Gurnee.

Registration is required and can be completed by calling HealthAdvisor at 800-323-8622. The registration code for both clinics is 5A05.

The effort is part of a bigger push this fall to raise awareness about cancer risks. Advocate Condell also is sponsoring a series of free community health education lectures, on topics including prostate health, cancer and weight, screening guidelines, breast health, and overall wellness and survivorship. Participants will receive updated information on disease prevention and treatment, and have the opportunity to ask questions of presenting physicians. Giveaways and refreshments also will be available.

The programs include:

Prostate Cancer: Know the Facts, Know the Risks, presented by Raza Khan, MD, Board Certified in Adult and Pediatric Urology, at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Advocate Condells Conference Center, 700 Garfield Ave. in Libertyville. Dr. Khan will review the factors that may affect a mans risk for prostate cancer, discuss the pros and cons of early detection tests, and talk about the latest treatments. A question and answer session will follow Dr. Khans lecture. The lecture is free, but registration is required. Call 800-323-8622 and request program 5C44.

An Evening of Cancer Wellness, which includes a physician lecture and a choice of small breakout sessions, from 6-9 pm on Monday, Oct. 8, at Advocate Condell Medical Centers Conference Center. Michael Cochran, MD, board certified in Oncology and Medical Director of Oncology at Advocate Condell Medical Center, will lecture on acute diagnosis, treatment and after care. After Dr. Cochrans presentation, guests will choose two of four breakout sessions on the following topics: Social-Emotional Affects of Cancer; Nutrition; Stress Reduction; and Exercise. After breakouts, a panel will be assembled of all clinicians involved for a Q&A. This free program is being presented in partnership with Cancer Wellness Services. Register by calling 847-509-9595.

Weight and Cancer, presented by Jennifer DeBruler, MD, Board Certified in Internal Medicine, at 6:30 pm on Thursday, Oct. 11, at Advocate Condell Medical Centers Conference Center. Of course, no diet or lifestyle can promise full protection against any disease. And for some people, good nutrition, a healthy body weight, and regular exercise may not affect their cancer risk. But if the nutrition and physical activity recommendations are taken as a lifelong commitment, many people can lower their risk of cancer and other diseases. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, of the more than 500,000 cancer deaths each year, one in three is linked to diet and activity habits like being overweight or obese. Thats the same number linked to tobacco use. Dr. DeBruler gives tips on weight management and start eating — and living — like a healthy person. A Q&A will follow the lecture. The lecture is free, but registration is required. Call 800-323-8622 and request program 5C45.

Should I Get Screened, presented by Dean Tsarwhas, MD, Board Certified in Oncology, at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Advocate Condell Medical Centers Conference Center. Cancer screening guidelines can differ dramatically. Should women get mammograms at 40 or 50? Should men have a PSA screen for prostate cancer at all? With so much information available to health consumers, it is easy to get confused. Dr. Tsarwhas will clarify the guidelines and answer questions. The lecture is free, but registration is required. Call 800-323-8622 and request program 5C48.

Breast Cancer: Know the Risks, Know the Facts, presented by Eileen Morrison, MD, Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, at 6:30 pm on Thursday, Oct. 25, at Advocate Condell Medical Centers Conference Center. Learn about the factors that may affect a womans risk for breast cancer, get information on early detection tests, and find out about the latest treatments. A Q&A will follow the lecture. The lecture is free, but registration is required. Call 800-323-8622 and request program 5C46.
